In India, cricket is a religion and Sachin Tendulkar is the God of cricket. So it comes as no surprise then that April 24 calls for a nationwide celebration given that Sachin Tendulkar celebrates his birthday on that day. For twenty-four years, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar represented India at the international level and every time he stepped out on the 22-yard pitch, people expected the best out of the master blaster’s bat. Sachin, who began playing for India at a young age of 16, went on to become one of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game. Today, the birthday boy turns 45-year old and we go down a very special memory lane.
Sachin Tendulkar has many records under his name, both in One Day Internationals and in Test cricket. While he may be a legend today, the Mumbai-born batsman too had humble beginnings. Playing for his school Shardashram Vidya Mandir, 15-year-old Sachin Tendulkar became a young sensation with his batting exploits at the state level and his batting was noticed. It was around this time that Sachin Tendulkar gave his first ever video interview to British writer and actor Tom Alter.
A shy but a confident Sachin reveals why he loves facing the fast bowlers, how it felt facing the champion bowler Kapil Dev in the nets and what he would do if he was selected in the team which was to tour West Indies in the coming days.
Have a look at the interview.
Making his test debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in 1989, Sachin represented India in 200 Test matches, scoring 15,921 runs with 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries. He played 463 ODI’s and went on to make 18,426 runs with 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries to his name. For an entire generation, including the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and others, Sachin Tendulkar will be their favourite cricketer. Sachin's number 10 jersey will forever be a favourite.
Happy Birthday Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar!
