What a match! At one point India was on top and the next minute Australia gains the upper hand, and then again India got the advantage. Keep repeating that and you’ll get the first match of the Domain series. Despite a superb rearguard defence mounted by the hosts, Virat Kohli & Co managed to break through with a historic win Down Under. This is the first time India won against Australia in the first match of a series and the sixth time India beat Australia in Australia.
Day 5 started 30 minutes earlier than usual – just like day 4 – to make up for time lost on Day 3 due to rain. Right from the start, Australia showed their winning intentions though Kohli chose to be defensive. After the wicket of Travis Head, Tim Paine and Pat Cummins looked determined to finish things for the hosts. After that partnership was broken, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon put up a tough fight. In the midst of all this, Virat’s efficiency in leading the team came under the scanner.
Kohli had been relying heavily on Ravichandran Ashwin and though the bowler delivered, he was visibly tired (he bowled a total of 52.5 overs). Many wondered why he gave the new ball to a spinner so early when it still had the shine on it. Questions were raised when Kohli attacked the Aussie lower order with Muraji Vijay instead of the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami.
But all that is the past, and the match is ours for the taking. History won’t remember the ‘what ifs’ and ‘the could haves,’ but will say that India won against Australia and that's what matters. With such an emphatic win, Twitter erupted with celebrities and sports stars passing their regards to the team. Check out their reactions below:
