Australian cricketer Steve Smith is under fire for a ball tampering incident resulting in him losing his position as captain of the team. He has been replaced by wicketkeeper Tim Paine, who is now the acting captain. Following the recent developments, Smith, who was supposed to captain the Rajasthan Royals, has been replaced by India opener Ajinkya Rahane.
Rajasthan Royals’ Head of Cricket, Zubin Bharucha said, "The incident in Cape Town has certainly disturbed the cricketing world. We have been in constant touch with the BCCI and taken their counsel. Furthermore, we have been in regular contact with Steve.”
Bharucha believes that considering the recent circumstances, “it's in the best interest of the Rajasthan Royals that he steps down as captain so the team can get ready for the start of the IPL without the ongoing distractions.”
Rajasthan Royals will be playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9th. Executive Chairman of Rajasthan Royals, Ranjit Barthakur welcomed Rahane saying that the lad had stepped up as a leader whenever he got the chance.
The Rajasthan Royals are making a comeback to the IPL after a ban of two years. They had spent a fortune to rope in Steve Smith this year.
