The latest episode of Chahal TV, hosted by Yuzvendra Chahal and powered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, featured the opener of India’s women’s cricket team, Smriti Mandhana. The video has Chahal asking Mandhana about her batting skills. Both the men’s and women’s team from India are in New Zealand. Interestingly, both teams inflicted an ODI series defeat to New Zealand but began their T20 tour in a disastrous manner.
In the new episode, Mandhana, the number one batter in world cricket, joked that she took batting inspiration from Chahal, a leg spinner. This happened when Chahal arrived in the middle during the fourth ODI of the five-match series against New Zealand. The tailender managed to top score with 18 runs to his account as India was crushed by a better performing Kiwi team. India was bowled out for 92 runs – their lowest total in New Zealand.
When asked if she learnt anything from watching him bat, Mandhana told Chahal, “I was inspired a lot after seeing you bat in the 4th ODI (vs New Zealand in Hamilton). I felt like I have to develop my game. You're one my inspirations when it comes to batting."
Mandhana wears the number 18 jersey – the same as Virat Kohli. When asked about the choice of number, she said, “I initially wanted the number 7 because that was my roll number in school. But that was not available. Then I was recommended taking the 18 number because it is also my birthday (18th July). I didn’t know then that Virat bhaiya has the same number. I have known for the last two years.”
