Do you cheer for Argentina?
Is Lionel Messi your favourite footballer?
Well then here’s the good news. The Latin American giants have qualified for the FIFA 2018 World Cup, Russia. The Albiceleste’s hope of qualifying was in jeopardy and started the game at 6th place with only the top four qualifying for the World Cup while the fifth goes to an intercontinental playoff against New Zealand. But a win meant that Messi and boys will end the qualifiers in the third place.
It is not just said in vain that Messi is the greatest footballer of the decade and yesterday night the five-time Ballon d’Or winner proved why he is called so. In a desperate must-win match against Ecuador, the 30-year-old Barcelona superstar produced a stunning performance scoring a hat-trick to see his team qualify for the biggest sporting event.
It was not a good start for Argentina. Ecuador scored in the opening minute of the game to end at a point it felt that the worldwide fan favourites will not make it through. But it was all Messi magic a few minutes later when he netted his first of the day. At 1-1, Argentina looked confident and the 2014 runners-up showed why they are feared at one of the best teams in the world. Eight minutes after the first goal, Messi helped Argentina take a deserved lead with a brilliant left-footed finish into the top corner. The genius completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute chipping the ball over the opponent’s goalkeeper.
Argentina qualifies for the World Cup in the third place along with Brazil sealing the top spot while Uruguay and Colombia finished at 2nd and 4th place respectively. Peru who had defeated Argentina in their last match finished at the 5th place and will be playing New Zealand in an attempt to qualify. In what could be the saddest moment for a lot of fans worldwide, Chile failed to qualify for Russia 2018 ending the dreams of watching Alexis Sanchez playing the beautiful game.
