It was a proud day for India at the Commonwealth Shooting Championship in Brisbane, Australia, as three Indian pistol shooters swept all three medals in the 10m air pistol event. Shahzar Rizvi, Omkar Singh and Jitu Rai won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. In another spectacular achievement, Pooja Ghatkar and Anjum Moudgil won the gold and silver respectively in the 10m women’s air rifle event. The bronze in this event went to Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore.
Team India had a rewarding second day at the range, winning five medals, including two gold, two silver and one bronze medal.
Yesterday, Heena Sidhu won gold in the 10m air pistol event, while Deepak Kumar claimed a silver in the 10m air rifle event to give India a great start at the Shooting Championships.
Sidhu shot a combined score of 626.2 (386+240.8) to claim the top spot. This was Sidhu’s second international gold after she and Jitu Rai had won at the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event at the ISSF Shooting World Cup Final held at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in Delhi in October.
On Tuesday, Deepak Kumar also had won a bronze medal in the 10m Air Rifle event. London Olympics bronze-medalist Gagan Narang finished fourth in the same event, while Ravikumar ended fifth. Narang shot 626.2 in the qualification to create Commonwealth record.
