Four-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist M C Mary Kom secured a berth in the finals of being played in Vietnam. Kom beat Japan's Tsubasa Komura in the lightweight category semi-finals to book a place in the gold medal round. The veteran boxer had an easy win over her Japanese counterpart, winning the bout by a unanimous decision.
Everyone believed that the boxer who has a Bollywood movie after her name is down for the count after she failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics. But Mary Kom is back and is all set to bag her fifth title. The Japanese fought hard to get back in the contest but the 34-year-old managed to hold off the former’s attacks. The final round was one-way traffic from the start with Mary Kom comfortably out-punching Komura.
The Manipur-born boxing great will next take on the winner of the bout between Jargalan Ochirbat of Mongolia and Kim Hyang Mi of DPR Korea in the final. Mary Kom already has four gold medals to her name in this competition in the past.
Kom was also recently named as the ambassador of the upcoming AIBA Women’s Youth World Championship. “It is an honor to have been chosen as Ambassador for the 2017 Women’s Youth World Championships and be a part of the prestigious competition to be held in India for the first time,” said the boxer to the International Boxing Federation prior to the championship matches in Vietnam.
