A return to one’s former club is always emotional but for Angel Di Maria, it was a disaster. The Argentine said that he expected a hostile reception at Old Trafford but he still couldn’t believe what ensued. Maria had left Manchester United to Join Paris Saint-Germain in 2015. From the moment the game started, the Argentine was booed at. Eventually, when he attempted to take a corner, someone hurled a bottle of water at him. The footballer even picked up a beer bottle and made a sarcastic attempt to drink from it.
Maria assisted in netting two of the goals as his side beat United 2-0. In some of the footage, the footballer appeared to be mouthing ‘f**k off’ to the supporters after Presnell Kimpembe scored the first goal. "It was difficult from the opening minute but I knew this was going to happen," Di Maria told Cadena Cope radio. But I've said it in the past and I reiterate it, I never spoke badly of the people here and of this club. These are things that happen and people took it badly. I only had problems with the coach [Louis van Gaal] here."
Twitter had a gala time over the incident and here are the reactions:
Following the hurling of the beer bottle, UEFA has opened up a disciplinary proceeding against Manchester United and might fine them. They also face charges for having the stairs in the stadium blocked, as per a report on Guardian. Meanwhile, PSG also faces charges over the conduct of their fans who set off fireworks and caused a disturbance.
