David Beckham was at a loss of words – but not in a good way - after seeing a statue of himself. The statue was displayed to the former footballer ahead of the official reveal at LA Galaxy’s stadium. When the covers were removed, Beckham was far from impressed, calling the hideous looking figure ‘Stretch Armstrong,’ thanks to the way it appeared to be flapping its hands. Little did he know, his buddy James Corden was secretly pranking him.
“It’s slightly different than it was when I saw it in Chicago,” Beckham was heard saying in a video, looking shocked and heartbroken. He began pointing out mistakes in the ‘fake’ statue, commenting about how outlandishly long his arms looked. He even told the fake artist that his bum doesn’t look anything like the statue.
“I believe, what I did here was trying to capture you in motion,” the fake artist told Beckham. Trying to not offend the so-called artist, Becks said: “Yeah but there was capturing me in motion but also making me… look at my chin!” He finally admitted: “There is no way that can go in front of the stadium. It’s embarrassing.” The former England star somehow kept calm and explained that his parents and his wife were coming down from London to see the statue.
After some time, a forklift meant to carry the figure to the stadium was brought in and wrecked the statue. “You’ve probably done me a favour there,” said an exasperated Beckham. Corden came out at that moment and revealed it was a prank. While Corden was in splits, David looked relieved, though it didn’t seem like he enjoyed it as much as the rest of the world.
