Wrestler Ritu Phogat shocked the world as she announced her desire to make a career change. The daughter of Mahavir Phogat, a wrestling coach, announced on Twitter that she’ll leave wrestling and instead, pursue a career in Mixed Martial Arts. Ritu is one of the Phogat sisters and her siblings include Geeta, Babita, and Sangita. Reportedly, Ritu has joined the Evolve Fight Team, a Singapore based team. Speaking to Times of India, she said that she is very excited about taking up the new profession.
"I am really excited to begin my new journey. The reason I picked MMA is because I want to be the first Indian to become MMA world champion,” she told the publication. The Wrestling Federation of India reportedly said that they were kept ‘in the dark’ since Ritu said that she was injured. In her tweet, Ritu mentioned that it was time for a 'new journey, a new challenge, a new beginning’, but her goal about representing the country remains the same.
"Everyone in our family is a wrestler. People have expectations since I'm Geeta and Babita's sister. I want to fulfil their expectations and hopes, not on the mat but inside a cage," she told TOI. By joining MMA, Ritu will have to drop her chances of representing India at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
