Phogat sisters make India proud at Commonwealth Wrestling Championship!
It’s raining medals for India at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship 2017, held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Indian wrestlers clinched 9 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. All four Phogat sisters Geeta, Sangeeta, Ritu and Vinesh claimed medals. With 3 gold medals and one silver, they got glory to the country. Sushil Kumar, who returned to the international mat after a gap of three years, also won gold in the 74 kg category on Sunday. Ritu and Geeta even took to their social media pages and shared the happy moment with a picture.
Ritu Phogat, Vinesh Phogat, and Geeta Phogat all claimed gold while Sangeeta Phogat got silver.
Though it has been a wonderful comeback for Sushil, the past few years haven't gone his way. Kumar missed the 2015 world championship due to a shoulder injury and had not participated in any national or international tournament the entire year. According to the Wrestling Federation of India rules, a player can only appear for Olympic trials if he/she has won a National or International medal in the past year. As a result, Narsingh Yadav earned the lone spot after claiming a bronze medal in the 2015 World Wrestling Championship. Sushil too staked claim to the spot owing to his Olympic record and insisted that a trial be held to determine who should ultimately represent India at Rio.
The matter went to the High Court and ultimately WFI, as directed by the court, finalized Narsingh for the position. However, in an epic turn of events, Narsingh Yadav failed a dope test for a banned steroid and with it his Rio Olympics accreditation. Sushil Kumar later ruled himself out of the running to take Narsingh's spot at Rio. Sushil revealed in an audio message on Twitter that he has not been training much ever since it was decided that Narsingh will be representing India in 74kg weight category after a legal battle.
Sushil has now returned and dominated his South African opponent Johannes Petrus giving him no chance to make any sort of headway on the mat. Kumar won 8-0 and as he clinched his fifth title at the Commonwealth level.
Soon, Bollywood also took to social media to congratulate the Phogat sisters. Celebs like Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Randeep Hooda, Tisca Chopra took to twitter to congratulate the ladies.
