Virat Kohli, the boss of Indian cricket is now a proud owner of the CNN-News18 Indian of the Year award. The CNN-News18 Indian of the Year is an annual award presented to various Indians for their work in their respective fields by the Indian media house CNN-News18. The awards are presented in various categories such as Politics, Sports, Business, Entertainment, Public Service and Global Indian.

Kohli’s achievements this year in cricket is nothing short of awe-inspiring. This year Kohli scored the highest amount of runs – a staggering 2,775 from 47 matches. He also has the second highest number of 100s (11) this year and completed 50 international 100s overall. Kohli also climbed up the ranks to become the world number one batsman in ODIs and T20s. As a captain, his results are staggering as well – with the maximum number of unbeaten series as captain. He is also the third most successful test captain with 20 wins from 31 matches.
Kohli shared the stage with India’s women cricket captain Mithali Raj. Kohli was awarded by Indian legends Ravi Shastri and Kapil Dev. As he collected his Indian of the Year trophy Virat was asked about his plans for his next milestone. "No targets, no expectations," Virat replied. "I'm still a typical Delhi boy so I can't express what I’m feeling standing here. I'm excited and nervous to be standing here and sharing it with such great people. I'll never forget where I came from or how I got here. For me, it's about the joy of feeling the ball hit the bat."
Coach Ravi Shastri said of Virat: "He can be very unorthodox, but mightily effective!" Virat was also the proud winner of the Jio Popular Choice Award.
The star studded award show saw several winners for various categories. Afroz Shah for public service, badminton player Kidambi Srikanth for sports, actor Rajkummar Rao for entertainment and Acharya Balkrishna for business. For the Outstanding Achivement category, it was Team Baahubali. India coach Ravi Shastri too was not left out as he won a Special Achievement award.
Miss World winner Manushi Chhillar received the Special Achievement Award along with cricketers Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami. Virat Kohli added another award to his collection when he won the Jio Popular Choice for Indian of the Year award. Adar Poonawalla won the Outstanding Award in Business and CSR award.
First awarded in 2006, others who have received this award have been personalities like Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, Arvind Kejriwal, P Chidambaram, AR Rahman, MS Dhoni, Ranbir Kapoor, Sania Mirza to name a few.
