With the festive fever taking over and Dussehra around the corner, the country is gearing up to mark the win of victory over evil. Ram Lilas are being performed with effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhakaran struck up only to be burned down on September 30. But they aren’t the only ones to be torched this Dusshera. Suryamanch of Indore, a volunteer organisation has decided to burn an effigy of self-styled godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan who was convicted of rape a few days back. As a symbolic support from the saint community, Mahamandleshwar Computer would be torching the 51-feet effigy.
However, this is not the first time that the community has come up something like this. They have been celebrating Dussehra for the last 21 years and from the past eight years instead of Ravana they have been going a step further by burning effigies of people who gained notoriety like the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, self-styled ‘godman’ Asaram Bapu or 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab.
This is a highly controversial step, given the fact that the conviction of the ‘love charger’ godman lead to massive violent protests all over Punjab, Haryana and parts of New Delhi. Being aware of the controversies and protests this event can garner, the volunteers of Suryamanch had already discussed their plans with different streams of society.
But according to news18.com, the organisation’s co-ordinator, Sunny Pathare, has claimed that they want to convey a message and don’t care much about any kind of protests.
Since Ravana is long gone, there is no better way to assert victory over evils that prevail in today’s times.
